The American Medical Fly Fishing Association was begun in 1969 with
the idea of combining our professional medical interests with that of
our interest in fly fishing and to promote conservation of our
natural resources as pertains to our sport and to support those
causes and efforts oriented towards these latter goals. The
organization has grown steadily over the years and presently is a
strong and viable organization.
Several years ago we decided to make West Yellowstone our permanent
site of meetings due to the tremendous variety of fishing experiences
available on such streams as the Yellowstone River, Madison River, and
Henry's Fork of the Snake in Idaho just to mention a few as well as
the fishing in the park and wonders of the great national park
offering not only fishing but all of its marvevls to the entire
family.
The annual meeting is held each year in August or September in West
Yellowstone. We have an annual banquet one evening at which time
one of the notables of the fly fishing world is invited to
participate in our meeting. This has included such people as
Charlie Brooks, Gary LaFontane, Dave Engerbreston, and
Jack Dennis.
We are a sustaining member of the Federation of Fly Fishers,
Century member of Trout Unlimited, have for years supported The
Silver Creek Conservation efforts of The Nature Conservancy, and
the Atlantic Salmon Federation. In the last few years we have
given monies both in the east to such organizations supporting
the protection of The Esopus River and the preservation of the
Beaver Kill River, and have supported the fight against the damming
of the west branch of The Penobscot River in Maine; Silver Creek
in Idaho, and Armstrong Spring Creek a number of years ago
in Montana.
The annual dues are $30.00 tax deduuctible. The only requirements
for membership are that one be a physician. The organization is
incorporated as a non profit group in the state of Illinois.
